Kyle's Story

Kyle’s Story

Life had been going amazingly well right before being diagnosed in May of last year. I had decided on joining the Fire Service Program to pursue my future career and was engaged to marry God’s blessing, Anna.  We were blessed with another child to arrive 2015 to add to an already amazing 2-year-old daughter.  I was making progress in the gym, working out and exercise was something I’ve always strived and most importantly to someday become a Fire Fighter.

Suddenly, five days after my 25th birthday, I was rushed to the ER with blood in my urine. After a day of deliberation it was decided that what I was experiencing was due to a cancer that originated in the kidney and metastasized (spread) to other regions of my body. After even further wait and travel to a few different hospitals in the region, we found out that it was specifically, Renal Medullary Carcinoma.  Turns out that this is an extremely rare condition, and no health care facilities had even heard of a case being documented.

Once that was made known we immediately began researching different cancers and treatments. Some of you may know that if you are sick you should never look up your symptoms, and this was one of those instances. I was immediately bombarded with grim and hopeless information. “This CAN’T be happening.” Once I got home after that first visit, I couldn’t help but tear up and have sad thoughts when I looked at my 2-year-old child. Thinking of my wife to be and child to come weren’t any help either.  The only thing that made it better was my continued faith in my Lord God, and the support of friends and family.
